Road Runner

Entry #1 Road Runner

Hello everyone, my name is Kyler McQueen, and I am a first-year student-athlete at Glendale Community College. Whenever I am outside of the classroom or not doing my homework, you can find me running circles at the Matt O. Hanhila Field. I am a part of the schools' track and field team. My events are the 400m dash and the 4x4 relay. These two events are considered one of the most gruesome the sport has to offer.

The 400 is a strategic run that does not heavily rely on speed as you are nearly sprinting the entire length of the track. The key to running the 400 is to maintain a fast relaxed pace for the majority of the run until you meet the last 120-meter mark. As you get closer and closer to the mark you want to start building up speed using the momentum off of the last curve. When you finally hit the mark, you want to keep your legs up, stepping over your knee and pushing off the ground. The last 100 meters is a mental game. It's all about who wants it more.

I am fairly new to this sport, with less than a year's worth of experience. Basketball was my main sport and I decided to make the transition after my last high school season. I still have areas that need critiquing but thanks to my coaches and teammates, the learning process has been easy to work through and I’ve had fun through the process. What started as an idea became an opportunity and I am extremely grateful for being given one at GCC. The future holds so much, and I cannot wait for it!

  1. Hi, Kyler. How you transitioned from basketball to a new sport is amazing! I've played soccer my entire life, so I can't really connect with switching sports, but I have tried other things, and after soccer, basketball, and football were for sure my second and third favorite sports to play. I agree that there are a lot of things ahead of us and that the future is full of opportunities. - Marco Gutierrez
