#Hashtag

Blog Entry #7 - #Hashtag

The hashtag symbol has become a popular symbol amongst our online communities. From once used as a numerical value indicator to now a way for people to interact and socialize with each other. The birth of the hashtag can date back to twitter of 2007, where people used hashtags on their post to categorize them with related topics or themes by simply putting # before a word. It has facilitated engagement allowing opinions, thoughts, and ideas being spread out all around the globe.

One of the most significant impacts of the hashtag is its effectiveness in social movements. In the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the hashtag has served as a call of unity, rallying supporters all over social media for change. It brought awareness and created/amplified voices with videos and articles being disputed on big networking platforms, mobilizing communities to demand equality and justice for the black community. The success of this movement has brough forth acknowledgment of racism and has created a cultural shift confronting it.

The hash tag has proved itself as a versatile tool not only for social movements, but also as a marketing strategy. Big businesses such as Nike use branded hashtags to create brand visibility. Similar to the Be Like Mike slogan, Nike uses #JustDoIt on ads or commercials to send a powerful and influential message to its consumer that reflects the brands empowerment and perseverance. To further enhance this message, Nike also uses athletes to share their stories of achievement and growth for the consumer to relate to.
